Ayutthaya is a former capital of Siam (Thailand), about an hour north of Bangkok. It was sacked/pillaged by the Burmese back in the day and rather than simply staying as a ruined site, the city continued to grow around the ruined palaces & temples. Its a simple day out via train from Bangkok if you want to see an earlier stage of Thai history.
