Phi Phi Don & Phi Phi Ley form this island chain on the Andaman side of Thailand. Made famous by the movie The Beach (based on a stunning book by Alex Garland) - even if its set on the Gulf Coast of Thailand. Its become a mecca for backpackers/partyfolk/tourists for the past 2 decades. Thailand has finally placed some limits around the tourism into Phi Phi Leh - where Maya Bay is, with it occasionally being closed for months at a time too. Was closed between July & October so while I hit the island after Phuket, I ended up coming back in October 22 after Khao Lak to see how Maya bay was fairing after the tourism changes. It is still "coming back" but one day with careful ecological guidance it will be truly beautiful. Its one of those places you'll love, however Phi Phi Don less so, its mostly centred around a heavily built up area between a couple of beaches/on an isthmus. Still for a few days between other spots - or to get some diving in its a good base.
